Raven Hostel is surrounded by pristine wilderness.

That means no roads, paths &
trails (other than mentioned in
the paddling trips descriptions).
The forest around us is mostly
poplar with many rock outcrops
and meadows, so it’s fairly
easy to walk in. For people
expert with map and compass,
experienced in wilderness
route finding, this is THE place
to be! Secluded ponds, back-
country lakes, mountain tops
and scenic hills are some of the
highlights you can expect to
find.

If you are not experienced in
bushwhacking and compass
orientation, we strongly re-
commend you stay within sight
of the lake at all times. It is
VERY easy to get lost here,
especially since there are no
immediate high mountains
around to use as landmarks.
There are many beautiful spots
along the shoreline though that
make great hiking destinations,
and of course where ever you
paddle to is a whole new area
to explore.

Being located in the remote
wilderness means that our
closest neighbours are moose, bears, marten, caribou,
wolves & eagles.

We hope you’ll have a chance
to see some of these animals,
but be aware that they are
usually shy of humans and call
a huge area their home.

Please show respect and don’t
approach wildlife. You’re a
visitor to their home and should
not make them feel threatened.

Your best chance to see wild-
life is to go for a quiet early
morning or late evening
paddle. It is an amazing thing
to watch a wild animal on its
home turf and we hope you’ll
get to experience it.

Rent a kayak or canoe ($35.-/day) and explore! Raven Hostel is a prime paddling location for both experienced paddlers and beginners.

Please note that Raven Hostel does not offer guided trips or kayak / canoe
instruction. You should have some paddling experience for these trips. Be
aware that if you fall into the very cold water, you are at high risk of dying
from hypothermia or drowning. For beginners, we highly recommend staying
within meters of the shoreline and not crossing the lake. We also have a
Zodiac with motor for rent at $85.-/day plus gas.

Here's some day trips you might enjoy:

1) Deep Bay/Lowry Lake - 15km return
Keep an eye open for moose! This is an island paradise in usually calm,
sheltered waters.Watch for arctic terns and bald headed eagles as you
paddle along grassy meadows and sheer cliffs. Great fishing!!
Option: walk or portage into Lowry Lake & explore some more! Extends the
trip by about 2 hours/+

2.) Fantail River - 18km return
THE destination for a hot, calm summer day: a long white sandy beach at the
mouth of Fantail River! Breathtaking views of the Coastal Mountains. Lots of
little bays with berries along the way.
Option: follow the trail along Fantail River and see the ospreys!

3) Northern Islands & Mud Bay - 10km return
Enjoy a private island! Warm shallow water and sandy beaches. Check out
the amazing UFO shaped stones in Mud Bay and see the beavers if you’re
lucky.

4) Indian Point - 26km return
It’s not swimming with dolphins, but here you can paddle with whitefish! The
water at Indian Point is boiling with hundreds of whitefish just below the
surface, a unique phenomenon. At Golden Gate, check the north shore for
moose.

5) Southern Islands - 8km return
Follow the shoreline to the southern islands where there’s usually an eagle
around. Stop and enjoy the berry patches on the way.
Option: Walk into the small secluded backcountry lake by Golden Gate
